Patan is situated on the elevated tract of land on the south side of the Bagmati River and is often considered to be the oldest and most beautiful among the three royal cities (Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur) in the Kathmandu Valley.

The Central Square is full of ancients palaces, temples & shrines. 

The city is believed to have been built during the reign of Vira Deva in 299 A.D.
