hr-3utg-4bp_01.jpgWill Sanyo revolutionize the way we use batteries on electronic devices ? Today, by chance I found a place selling Eneloop batteries and bought few packs.

Eneloop are Ni-MH rechargeable batteries… nothing very new till here.

The difference ? They are sold fully charged so you can buy and use them immediately.

Then once the power is gone, instead of throwing them away returning them to your preferred shop for recycling, you can simply recharge them as any Ni-MH or Cad-Ni rechargeable batteries.

En Resumé : eneloop is a combination of a rechargeable and a disposable battery.

  • Ready for immediate use
  • Low self-discharge
  • environment friendly
  • universal applications (actually available in AA & AAA size)
  • higher performances (up to 4 times more powerful than Alkaline batteries)
  • Recyclable package
battery.gif

Technical specs :

AA   : 2000 mAh (min. 1900 mAh)
AAA : 800 mAh (min. 750 mAh)
Charging cycles : 1000
Price : 500 THB (14.25 USD for 4)
Storage Energy loss : after 6 month 10%, after a year 15%
Charging time : depending on the charger. Sanyo says 250 mins for 2 AA batteries

So now it's testing time, but I already like the idea of having batteries that offer advantages of both disposable and rechargeable ones.

On 26th of December 2006 a 7.2 strong earthquake in Southern Taiwan damaged several telecommunication submarine cables linking China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, among others, to overseas telecommunication networks, including Internet backbone.

subcable2007.jpg

More than a month later, repair work is not done yet due to bad weather conditions & poor equipment. Customers, Telecom companies & media start to express their discontent."It will be a long time before Internet access is fully recovered between Asian and the US as workers are using "technologies of the 19th century to solve problems of the 21st century," Sina.com said today

According Shanghai Daily, quoting Global Marine General Manager, none of the optical fiber in 4000m deep damaged cables have been fully repaired yet. Today's report says that work should be completed by January 30th (some other sources say end of February). Currently up to 70% of traffic from mainland China has been re-routed using alternative pathways such as satellite links, which are slow, expensive and unstable compared with cable-based connections.

This remind us the loss of satellite Intelsat IS-804 in January 2005 which left 10 countries of the Pacific rim without any communication links for days, as no backup was available) and forced 8 others to switch to their backup systems.

Such events clearly show us what happens when main overseas communications links go down and how weak, when exists, are fallback systems.

Just imagine if such disruptions were man-made in order to turn the world back to the "telegraph age"….

Bad luck for Apple, but few days after the highly publicized announcement of Apple Inc. iPhone, Cisco sues Apple Inc. for trademark infringement on using "iphone" name which are Linksys family product, available on market since 2006.

Now what will happen with LG and their KE850 Prada phone, awarded with the "International Forum Design Product Design Award for 2007". The external look is rather similar, but it's difficult to find detailled technical specifications on the Internet.

iphone-vs-ke850-wm.jpgObviously I don't have any idea if some agreements took place between LG Electronics & Apple but the LG model really seems to be the 1st cellphone using tactile display without use of any stylus. So the similarity of the design plus the input mode made the Apple iPhone & LG KE850 very similar.

Without agreements for sure Apple Inc. will certainly be sued by LGE.

Now, the question is: do they (Apple) do it (getting sued) on purpose in order to get a maximum visibility ?

A trial, ending with a "gentlemen agreement" may not be necessarily more expensive than any advertising campaign but presence on medias (blog, news, webzine, magazine, etc.) will be lots more efficient.

Any guess ?

warningsign-1.jpgInteresting informations complied by "404 Brain Not Found" regarding the most radioactive story of 2006.

The polonium-210 discovered by Marie Curie in 1898 came back to newpapers frontpage  and to the cocktail list of one of London's famous hotel leading to the death of a former soviet spy who died after having ingested a very small quantity of it.

On "Los Angeles Time" article we discover that :

  • polonium-210 is deadly and undetectable until it's too late.
  • a grain of salt quantity is enough to kill someone
  • a gram of it may kill up to 50 million people and sicken another 50 million.
  • it's a least a million time more toxic than Zyklon Bvodkamartini.jpg
  • 100 grams are produced every year, mainly by Russia

Such tragic event definitively send James Bond and his friends back to school's benches… and bad luck for us, this time it is not a fiction.

katmvalley029.JPGAs I'm not a big fan of Christmas & New Year parties, I took few days off, un-plugged everything and flew "ahead in time"..to year Poush 2063 of the Nepali calendar.

These 10 "disconnected" days were spent in the Kathmandu Valley visiting ancient cities, buddhist & hindu temples while enjoying the surrounding of Himalayan summits. All pictures are available as usual in the Gallery
