Firefox 3 makes it easy to select a default email application like Outlook or Thunderbird. When you click a mailto: link on a web site, that application will automatically open.

On Firefox 3 RC1 you can also choose a webmail application like Yahoo! Mail or Gmail.

  • Selecting Yahoo! Mail as your default email provider is simple. Just hit the Tools button, select Options, navigate to the Applications tab, and select Yahoo! Mail from the dropdown list next to “mailto.”
  • Lifehacker, here are the steps to add Gmail:
  1. Type about:config in the URL bar, and click the I’ll be careful button to continue.
  2. Type gecko.handlerservice into the filter field and find the listing that ends with allowRegisterFromDifferentHost. Click this button to change the value from false to true.
  3. Copy this line of code into the URL bar:
    javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler(“mailto”,”https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s”,”GMail”)

  4. A window will pop up asking if you want to add GMail, say yes and you should be all set.

Next time you click a mailto: link on a web site, you should get a choice of services to use including Gmail. You can then set Gmail as your preferred email service.

a700.jpgSearching the web, I found several online photo editors, and among there some which provide the possibility to upload your photos directly to your favorite site where you can share them.

It was not a surprise to discover that sites such Flickr and Facebook are the most integrated with these online photo editors, closely followed by Picasa and Photobucket. If all online photo editors propose basic editing tools such resize, crop, color balance, etc.. it's difficult to find one which propose all available options. Some tried to be as close as possible from Photoshop, proposing layer tools or distortion tool.

Fine tuning and precise corrections are difficult to obtain but at the opposite these tools, specially when you can edit an already published photo, give you the possibility to adjust your photos from any computer without having to purchase/install software on computers.

My 3 preferred ones are:

  • Splashup (formerly Fausto) which is certainly the most complete one. Photoshop looks alike, so you feel comfortable with only if you have some knowledge about Adobe products. Loading a photo may be very slow from time to time (my ISP fault or are they victim of their success ?)

  • PicNik which proposes an user friendly interface and does not require Photoshop knowledge. Advanced editing tools, touch-up tool, frames etc.. are only available with the Premium version which cost 25 USD/year. This editor seems to be the easiest and fastest editor available.
  • Phixr is a simple one but fast and well integrated too with most usual image sharing sites but not providing preview of the photo you want to edit is a real problem if you do not have title on your photos.
  • Some other solutions to may want to give a try : Cellsea, Pixer.us, Snipspot, Fotoflexer, Pikfix, Fanstudio, Online PhototoolFlauntr, Fotocrib, etc..

Soon, Adobe will also release an online version of its flagship software "Photoshop". Adobe Photoshop Senior Product Manager John Nack published on his blog earlier last month few lines about "Photoshop Express".

My 1st post about Flickr tools is here

I will start to compile some informations about tools that make Flickr even better. This first post is about scripts that add useful tools and improve rendering of Flickr pages.

Next posts related to Flickr will be about photo online editors, Flickr 3rd party applications, etc.. Greasemonkey is a Firefox add-on (works also on Flock) which allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript.

Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are already available at Userscripts.org.

Martin Gommel's listed the 10 most useful scripts for Flickr and published it on the Digital Photography School blog.

  1. Flickr Auto Page This is definitely one of the most useful scripts for Flickr. It allows you to scroll though a stream without clicking the “next page” – button. Older images are loaded automatically.
  2. Flickr New Contact More Links This script displays more useful information in you Flickr-inbox about the user when they add you as a new contact.
  3. Flickr Multi Group Sender This one gives you the ability to post an image to multiple Flickr groups at the one time. Warning : If an image is posted in too many groups you reduce the probability of your image being explored ! I recommend adding images to a maximum of 5 groups.
  4. Flickr Move Comment Form Up This makes commenting on images a lot easier. This script always displays the comment box underneath you selected image – regardless of how many other comments have already been written.
  5. Flickr Photo Rank Photo Rank will show you a photo’s rank if it is in the top 1000 most interesting images of the day. After installation you can find it under “Additional Information” on the photo’s page.
  6. FlickrPM FlickrPM allows you to get important information about another user in a short amount of time by blending in different buttons next to the username on their stream (like icons for mail, profile, favorites, Scout and interestingness). Useful: With FlickrPM you can send the user a Flickrmail without leaving the selected page.
  7. Buddy Icon Reply This is another time saver scripts for Flickr. With it you will never have to copy&paste user names you want to reply to on your or other images. With one click you will get a little icon of the user you want to answer in your comment box. Nice !
  8. Flickr Background Color This script is all about aesthetics and is an easy to use tool that changes the background color on a photo page. It displays several shades of gray through to black. So if an image has a “dark feeling” the white standard Flickr background won’t disturb it.
  9. Flickr Follow Comments This useful script helps you to view images that you have commented on – but only those that interest you. If you are writing lots of comments every day you know how hard it is not to get distracted by the overload of images when you click “Comments You’ve made”. With this userscript you have 4 different options to see only certain types of comments.
  10. FlickrMailManager This MailManager is the one of those scripts I will always value, because it makes handling your flickr-inbox much easier. For instance you can “mark all as read”, “delete group invites” and “nuke mailbox”. The processing time depends on the size of your inbox – so I use it very often

What are your preferred GM scripts ?

airtalkr.jpgAirTalkr is another multiple IM client application immediately available in its beta version for Windows, Linux , Mac OSX as well as on Web-based version.

IM supported protocols are MSN, ICQ, GTalk, Yahoo and AIM but AirTalkr also connects you to your YouTube and Flickr accounts. In addition, AirTalkr creator Hu Shunjie comes with an interesting concept called "AirCards". AirCards are profiling cards where you can add of your buddies information such their Twitter and blog updates, their photos on Flickr as well as their profiles on MySpace and Friendster.

AirTalkr is a very light application but requires the installation of Abobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) which enables developers to use Flash, Flex, Ajax and HTML to create rich interface applications.

YouTube Preview Image

The AirTalkr version is still beta and some bugs have been reported but I personaly like this very smooth application and really looking to see what will come next (Skype, more social networking plateforms supported, etc..)

It definitively worth a try. Did I mention that AirTalkr is free and totally Ads-Free (Thanks Hu!).

Download AirTalkr here and Abobe AIR here.

lightroomicon.jpgAdobe has released its latest version of Lightroom with embedded version of Camera Raw 4.2.

Among others, following RAW formats are now supported:

  • Canon EOS 40D
  • Fuji FinePix IS-1
  • Olympus EVOLT E-510
  • Panasonic DMC-FZ18
  • Pentax K100D Super
  • Sony Alpha 700

For these using computer with non-English operating system or Regional Settings there is a simple trick to make sure that Lightroom appears in English:

  1. Open your Lightroom installation folder (e.g C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.2) in Windows Explorer.
  2. Create a folder named e.g "Disable languages"
  3. Open the Resources folder and move all unused language folders (e.g "fr", "de", "jp") into your newly created "Disable Languages"
  4. Et Voilà!

wisher_logo.jpgWhisher, a Spanish start-up, backed by Switzerland’s leading phone company, Swisscom, and the venture firm Benchmark Capital Europe is apparently very active for few month now. The principle of Whisher is that Wireless Access to the Internet should be free and accessible from everywhere which is basically the same concept than FON Movimiento, except that you don't need to purchase any specific hardware.

Whisher' users are requested to download an application through which they can share their wireless access (works also with WEP or WPA connections) with other Whisher members

The newly released version 2.0 beta of the software offers more than just storing and encrypting connections' passwords such:

  • Wireless connection manager
  • WiFi sharing
  • Chat with other users connected on the same wireless access point.
  • Multi Instant Messenger support (Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, GoogleTalk, Twitter, Jabber)
  • File Transfer (with users sharing the same wireless AP)
  • LAN Support
  • GeoLocation
  • Other Networks connections (access via commercial access; hotspot, etc..). FON is supported too.
  • Around You. Gives you informations about coming events, restaurants around the wireless connection you are currently using.

New services that should be available soon :

  • Voice Support
  • Global File Sharing

Plateform supported : Windows XP, Linux, Mac O/S. Vista not available yet.

The software is still beta and some stability and registation problems have been reported. More information on their Blog

pamfax.gifFew years ago, it was Internet over Telephone network but the situation is shifting and we have now, with Internet broadband access, Telephone over the Internet.

With the so called "unify messaging system" all type of communication can reach your email inbox while travelling but in some situation, sending a fax (yes it still exists) while on the move may not be so easy than it seems and even very costly (money and time).

This week, German company PamConsult launched a beta version of PamFax, a Skype Extra (add-ons), which makes possible faxing a document from any Internet broadband connected computer (with Skype software installed and activated).

The process is rather simple :

  • Select the document to be sent
  • Enter recipient(s) fax number
  • Optionally, select a cover page
  • Select notification methods : Skype Chat, SMS (0.26 USD) an/or email.
  • Pay the fax using Sky Credits
  • Optionally, preview it

PamFax comes with its own website where you can configure your default settings, consult logs and check current sending rates

There are 7 different, per page, rates which are currently the following:

  • Most European countries and North America :0.23 USD
  • 4 zones of selected countries from all over the Word with price tag between 0.40 and 1.38 USD
  • Most African countries : 1.64 USD
  • Rest of the World :  2.19 USD

    Check rates on Pamfax website

Technical requirments:

  • Windows 2000 SP4, XP or Vista (32 or 64 bit)
  • Internet Explorer 6 or better
  • Latest Skype (min. Skype 3.0)
  • Installed Skype Plugin Manager

During the beta phase, PamFax is only available to Skype users outside Canada and USA

Every user gets 1 test fax in zone 1 (0.23 USD) for free.

SumatraSplash.pngIf everybody recognizes how useful PDF files are, most also agrees that Adobe Acrobat reader is big (download package is 22 MB) and really slow to load.

For a fast opening of PDF files, Foxit, a free, light and fast viewer often replaces Acrobat Reader but Foxit still requires an installation package (2 MB).

Sumatra PDF (beta 0.7), a new comer, is a free, light (0.8 MB), opensource, and single executable file which can easily be installed either on a computer or on an USB stick.
