Following the Touch Diamond few days ago, HTC announced the “Touch Pro” which utilizes similar styling and functionality of the highly anticipated Touch Diamond™ and introduces a variety of business-focused enhancements that make getting work done on the go quick and easy.
With the Touch Pro, they introduce a TouchFLO 3D, a touch screen innovation providing a stunningly intuitive way to zip through common tasks like messaging, calendar appointments or making calls with just one touch. Shall we call TouchFLO 3D the HTC response to Apple ?
Will the Touch Pro the replacement of my aging HTC S620 or will Apple iPhone 3G version (to be announced on June 9th at WWDC) shake the market again with stunning innovations ?

Not releated at all with Nomadcom (just in case some might have a doubt) ,
Skype has selected Rebecca, a 26 y/o Australian girl, to take up the "Skype Nomad Challenge" which is to travel non-stop around the Globe and demonstrates that Skype is now mobile.
Over 33 days, Rebecca "The Nomad" will be using as many different forms of transport possible for a girl – from jumbo jets to dog sleds, canoes to camels, sky diving to revolving restaurants.
Her non-stop journey started on May 5th from London (UK) to Singapore, China, Australia (current location) Alaska, USA an back to Europe.
To keep in touch, Rebecca uses SkypePhones as well as a Nokia N810 (the Internet Tablet) loaded with, indeed, Skype software.
All related links which also gives a good overview of what Web 2.0 is offering:
All this perpetual motion is also for a good cause – to create some noise about an awesome charity called Motivation. Basically, they help disabled people in poor countries get mobile.
I may propose to Skype the Challenge #2 as I have an extended list of countries and locations which cannot be so called "Internet/mobile phone" friendly… interested ?

HTC launched earlier this week in London the "Touch Diamond" the lastest smartphone of their TOUCH series.
The Touch Diamond is a stainless steel frame based of only 11.5mm thick, comes with a 2.8 inch touch-sensitive TFT 640×480 VGA screen. An integrated GPS system as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera and a second VGA CMOS one are also available.
This "iPhone-like" smartphone will be available in Europe and Asia in June 08 for about 770 USD.
Surprisingly, there is apparently no Mini-SD card slot to extend the 4 GB internal storage memory.
Highlights:
- 2.8-inch touch screen, with four times the pixels of most phones.
- Vibrant TouchFLO 3D user interface, responding perfectly to your finger gestures when scrolling through contacts, browsing the web, and launching media… all vividly displayed as photos and artwork powered by the 3D graphics processor.
- HTC Weather – providing a constant view of weather at home and abroad.
- Surf and download at broadband speed with HSDPA internet connectivity.
- 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera for quality stills and video.
- 4GB of internal storage to preserve more photos, music, files and exchanged data than ever before.
- Integrated GPS for use with maps software for a full turn-by-turn satellite navigation experience.

Not yet sure if it is a good news or not, but Air France has become the first airline in the world to offer an in-flight mobile phone service on international flights.
One Airbus A318 aircraft operating European routes has been fitted with a mini GSM base station to provides 123 passengers the possibility to :
- Send and receive sms and mms messages
- Send and receive emails via all phones with Internet access
During the second half of the trial, passengers will be able to make and receive phone calls, with the service being regulated to maintain passengers’ comfort and well-being.
If passengers kindly turn off ringing traffic data from/to an aircraft should not be a big deal, if not journeys may become quite annoying with uninterrupted flow of incoming messages ringing alert.
Hard to imagine how will be a long haul flight with full mobile phone services (voice and data) "offered" to passengers.
At the end of the six-month trial, Air France will examine the feedback and comments made by customers to determine whether to launch this service on all its flights.
What is your feeling about the availability of in-flight mobile phone service ?
For the technical part, Air France uses Mobile OnAir onboard mobile telephony system, certified by EASA (European Aviation Safety Authority) which does not interfere with the radio-navigation instruments on this Airbus A318 and may only be used at cruising altitude once the new illuminated sign “Switch off your phone” is turned off (recycling the "no smoking" sign ?). The system is activated at 3,000 metres (10,000 feet).
More about this trial on AirFrance site including a video of the 1st trial flight.

China Mobile, the World largest mobile phone service provider with its 350 millions customers (mainly in China!) has completed the installation and testing of their 3 mobile phone base stations installed on Mt-Everest slopes.
The 3 solar-powered stations installed respectively at 5200, 5820 and 6500 meters above sea level, were transported by porters and yaks and built in a harsh environment where oxygen level is only 38 percent of what it would be on ground. They will make possible for climbers and those who will be 2008 Summer Olympics torch relay route to establish and receive calls along the entire Mount Everest climbing route, including its 8'848m. peak.
After the completion of these ultimate test, China mobile workers immediately started to pack all equipments away for the winter. The station will be reinstalled next summer before 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Just finished to watch Hugo Ortega's video presenting HTC Shift and I must admit I like the HTC idea of bringing to us an UMPC (Ultra-mobile computer) which has 2 processors and 2 operating systems working independently on board.
Is the UMPC form factor market ready to take-off soon ? Is the double O/S option chosen by HTC the winning one ?
A recent research by In-Stat found the following:
- The UMD worldwide forecast is for more than 8 million units in 2011.
- 2008-2010 will be key years for the development of a market inflection point of anytime/anywhere wireless connectivity that is necessary for widespread adoption of the UMD paradigm.
Some specifications:
- Size: 19 x 13.5 x 3cm
- Weight:
0.9 kg 0.791 kg
- 7 inches display
- Resolution : 800×480 – 1024×600
- Operating Systems : Windows Mobile 6 & Windows Vista Business
- CPU's : Qualcomm 400 MHz for WM6 & Dual Core 800 MHz Intel A110 for Vista
- 7 days battery capacity running on WM6 only. 3 hours on Windows Vista
- Ram Memory : 1 GB
- Hard Drive : 40 GB
- Communication : WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0,
- Phone data : Quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE – Tri-Band UMTS/HSPDA
- 1.3 MB built-in camera
- 1 USB 2.0 port, 1 VGA port
- 1 Finger print reader
- 1 SD Card reader
- Slide out Tilt display
- Price tag : 1200 euros (?)
- Availability : Q3 2007
The very interesting concept is the possibility to switch from one environment (e.g WM6) to the second one (Vista Business) and back in just the press of a button. Input can be done either using the QWERTY keyboard or the hand-witting recognition system.
Streaming video is available on Gottatobemobile.com or there is a 250 MB video available for download here.

Another multi protocol Instant Messaging (IM) application for mobile device (Symbian and Windows Mobile) is Fring (still a Beta). This free mobile VoIP software gives the possibility to communicate with Skype, MSN, Google Talk, Twitter.
Fring also supports SkypeOut as well as SIP-based services such as GizmoProject, VoIPStunt, among many others. Real-Time contact presence is also taken into consideration.
Once connected using packet switching network (Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE, etc..) you can then select which communication option you want to use to establish a voice communication: Fring, SkypeOut, SIP or simply the GSM network.
Unlike Agile Messenger, Fring doesn't propose file or photo transfer and Yahoo protocol has not been taken on board.
To install the software on a supported device, once the installation page filled up, a SMS is sent with the link to your terminal. Your phone number will be used as User-ID.
While doing some text and voice test using my HTC S620 (Dopod C720) I have very few points that require, on my point of view, some improvements:
- Different services cannot be managed individually
- Switch OFF external speaker while on voice call
- Add File, photo, video transfer
test continues..

While HTC Europe concentrate all its marketing on HTC-Touch, in Asia, HTC under its Dopod brand name has released earlier last month the Dopod C730 also known as HTC Cavalier successor of Dopod 720w (HTC S620).
At first look there are not many differences between both models. the C730 is slightly thicker (0.7mm) but also lighter 120g (-10g) than its predecessor.
Price tag in Singapore : 790 SGD (513.- USD)
Main differences are the following :
- MicroSD slot is now accessible from outside. Easier to swap cards
- Operating System is Windows Mobile 6 which integrates more services (Office files edition, Live Search, MSN, etc..)
- Camera 2 mega pixels.
- Better battery capacity (1050 mAh)
- Samsung 400 MHz CPU, 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash ROM
- Quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) + 3G and HSDPA connectivity
Some points are still missing or require improvements
- Touch-sensitive strip on the edge of the phone is still hard to tame (usually I just use it to adjust volume during calls).
- Only a 2 megapixel camera when Nokia proposes 5 mega ones.
- No LED flash and front-facing camera for 3G video calls.
- No standard audio jack but a multi-purpose mini-USB connector instead.

While "everybody" is expecting Apple and its future iPhone (expected in USA by the end of June 07), HTC announced on the 5th of June, after few teasing days, its own touch screen smartphone.
The HTC TouchFlo, a touch screen running on Windows Mobile 6 Professional which according HTC will revolutionize the way you use the touch screen by allowing finger scrolling and panning.
Unlike the Apple iPhone, HTC TouchFlo is already available in UK (Expansys at 520 €) and will be on asian and european shelves later this month. US market will be provided later this year.
I wonder how the input method will work and how comfortable typing messages or entering information will be with a touch screen keyboard where a constant attention is needed to make sure that all letters have been correctly entered.
