giftbox.jpg76% of 1200 American consumers who participated to Digital Life America – Holiday 2007 Edition survey have included at least one digital lifestyle product on their wish list.

  1. flat screen high definition TV set – 35% (men 37% – women 33%)
  2. laptop (windows) – 20% (21% – 19%)
  3. digital camera – 17% (16% – 18%)
  4. desktop PC – 14% (13% – 15%)
  5. GPS navigation unit for the car – 10% (11% – 10%)
  6. cell phone – 10% (9% – 12%)
  7. digital video camera – 9% (8% – 11%)
  8. Nintendo Wii – 9% (8% – 9%)
  9. Sony PS3 – 7%
  10. Blu-ray or HD-DVD player – 6%

First Apple product (laptop) is on rank 11 (9 among women) buzz maker iPhone is 15. Survey participants clearly prefers laptop to desktop computers.

Unfortunately the survey doesn't reveal details about the type of cell phone ("simple" ones or smartphone) and I'm surprised to not ear anything about MP3 players nor PDA. Not trendy anymore or everybody already has one ?

What your wish list would be made of ?

mobileexpo07.JPG I went yesterday to the "Thailand Mobile Expo 07" with hope to discover some "real" new products. Instead I found the Expo 07 to be more a fair than an exhibition where you can find at least 2-3 salespersons per visitor, but no real new innovations.

  • Samsung was presenting their Ultra Edition II series (U600, U300 and U100)
  • LG came with the Prada
  • Motorola was around with the Razr2 V8
  • Sony Ericsson shown the new P1i & T650i
  • HTC publicized the Touch and P3600i
  • and Nokia with lots of different models with the N95 among them

Aside of mobile phones, they was a huge sale of different accessories such bluetooth headsets, car accessories, and all type of memory stuff such memory sticks, SD cards, MicroSD etc..

In resume, nothing different that you can already find in Bangkok IT shops and not a single word about incoming products such Apple iPhone, HTC Cavalier or Shift as per examples which is a bit pity in country where carrying the last mobile phone is still very trendy.

Let's see what next week 2nd Annual Asia IT will come with.

Mashable has established a +90 list of most Instant Messaging (IM) tools available with respectively

  • 30 single IM system clients
  • 15 Multi-Networks applications
  • 20 Web-based solutions (ideal to bypass corporate firewall ?)
  • 15 IM solutions for mobile terminal running on Symbian, Windows Mobile and even iPhone.

Despite of a large quantity of different software to be used on most common IM network, it is interesting to notice that most multi-network solutions provide access to most popular IM networks (Yahoo, MSN, GoogleTalk, ICQ) but only very few have added Skype in their supported network list.

In resume difficult to sort out 2 or 3 solutions which would make a real difference with others. For my own use, I would narrow my final selection on some of the following ones:

iphone_optimized.pngContentRobot has released earlier last week a WordPress plugin (requires WP 2.2.1) that would allow iPhone visitors to optimally view WordPress blogs. The iWPhone plugin comes with its own theme which will automatically reformats blog’s content for optimized viewing on Apple’s iPhone.

Feature List

  • Formats your blog content for optimized viewing on the iPhone.
  • Automatically detects the iPhone’s Safari browser and only displays the custom theme to iPhone visitors, other visitors get your standard theme.
  • Simple iPhone-like theme with common interface elements that compliments the iPhone’s internal applications.
  • Images larger then 300 pixels wide are automatically scaled down to fit the iPhone optimized width.

If you don't own an iPhone, you can review the reformated site using a small application called iPhoney but so far you need to have Mac OS X 10.4.7 (or later) and Safari installed on it as Windows version of iPhoney is not available yet.

Note: As I don't have a MAC nor an iPhone, feedback from iPhone owners about presentation my site would be highly appreciated

c730.jpgWhile HTC Europe concentrate all its marketing on HTC-Touch, in Asia, HTC under its Dopod brand name has released earlier last month the Dopod C730 also known as HTC Cavalier successor of Dopod 720w (HTC S620).

At first look there are not many differences between both models. the C730 is slightly thicker (0.7mm) but also lighter 120g (-10g) than its predecessor.

Price tag in Singapore : 790 SGD (513.- USD)

Main differences are the following :

  • MicroSD slot is now accessible from outside. Easier to swap cards
  • Operating System is Windows Mobile 6 which integrates more services (Office files edition, Live Search, MSN, etc..)
  • Camera 2 mega pixels.
  • Better battery capacity (1050 mAh)
  • Samsung 400 MHz CPU, 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash ROM
  • Quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) + 3G and HSDPA connectivity

Some points are still missing or require improvements

  • Touch-sensitive strip on the edge of the phone is still hard to tame (usually I just use it to adjust volume during calls).
  • Only a 2 megapixel camera when Nokia proposes 5 mega ones.
  • No LED flash and front-facing camera for 3G video calls.
  • No standard audio jack but a multi-purpose mini-USB connector instead.

Full Specification available on Dopod Singapore site

iphone_1.jpgYet another post about Apple iPhone, even if, as most of people, I haven't seen it yet. However, reading some articles about this "famous" iphone (11'000 print articles and 69 millions hits on Google in the last six months according the New York Times

I find very surprising that following support or services (according Presse-Citron review) will not be available on the, soon to be release, first Apple iphone :

  • Games (ok, perhaps it's a professional tool)
  • Office document editor (ok it's not a Microsoft product)
  • Cut-Paste function
  • Memory extension slots (is it why there are 2 models of iphone ?)
  • MP3 ringtones (iTunes don't sell ringtones)
  • A2DP support for stereo bluetooth headset
  • Push Mail (ok, perhaps it's not a professional tool)
  • GPS
  • Flash & Java support (not sure you can even display Apple website pages)
  • Instant Messenging
  • MMS
  • Voice recognition
  • Video capture
  • Camera zoom and flash

    and there is even worst

  • Audio jack is not a 3.5mm standard. An adapter is needed if you want to use your iPod headphones. iphonejack.JPG
  • Not 3G network compatible (UMTS, HSDPA, etc..)
  • Battery cannot be remove (no way to carry a spare one)
  • No built-in WiFi. (my mistake)

  • Without 3G, Web browsing with the iPhone will be an experience..if you're patient enough and unlucky enough to not find a WiFi hotspot close by!

iphoneantena.JPGand last but not least, the antenna is located at the bottom of the phone, right there were your hand holds the phone. This will surely helps a lot when the signal is weak.

Cherry on top of the cake, iPhone will be available only with a 24 months operator's subscription and its price tag is above 500 USD. Even without seeing it live, the so much expected iPhone will not replace my HTC 620.
