HTC launched earlier this week in London the "Touch Diamond" the lastest smartphone of their TOUCH series.
The Touch Diamond is a stainless steel frame based of only 11.5mm thick, comes with a 2.8 inch touch-sensitive TFT 640×480 VGA screen. An integrated GPS system as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera and a second VGA CMOS one are also available.
This "iPhone-like" smartphone will be available in Europe and Asia in June 08 for about 770 USD.
Surprisingly, there is apparently no Mini-SD card slot to extend the 4 GB internal storage memory.
Highlights:
- 2.8-inch touch screen, with four times the pixels of most phones.
- Vibrant TouchFLO 3D user interface, responding perfectly to your finger gestures when scrolling through contacts, browsing the web, and launching media… all vividly displayed as photos and artwork powered by the 3D graphics processor.
- HTC Weather – providing a constant view of weather at home and abroad.
- Surf and download at broadband speed with HSDPA internet connectivity.
- 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera for quality stills and video.
- 4GB of internal storage to preserve more photos, music, files and exchanged data than ever before.
- Integrated GPS for use with maps software for a full turn-by-turn satellite navigation experience.

8th of November: World Usability Day "Make life easy"
Swiss UPA, the Swiss chapter of the Usability Professional Association proposes to ease access to free public wireless networks using a specific sign ((o)) that would help users to detect easy to use wireless networks.
Today, before getting online using a wireless device, users have first to find an user-friendly wireless access point and then try to connect to it.
The user has to detect which wireless networks are available from his location and check if they are public and free of charge. Often wireless network names do not inform the visitor if the access to the network is free or not. The wireless access point might not be protected but once connected users are redirected to a page where they will be invited to purchase access rights.
Swiss UPS also highlight the fact that once connected to a free and public wireless network, it is not uncommon to reach an authentication page before getting access to the Internet. This procedure has 2 main disadvantage:
- Some authentication pages cannot be completed when using a Smartphone or a PDA.
- Some services such email, Instant Messaging, VoIP, etc… do not require the use of a browser and users cannot pass easily through this authentication method.
To make users' life easier, Swiss UPS proposes to include at the beginning of the SSID (Service Set Identifier which broadcasts the name of the wireless network) of public and free wireless networks the following distinctive sign: ((0))
Usage of the sign ((o)) is free and open to all individuals, collectivities and organizations which operate a WiFi network respecting Swiss UPA usability charter.

76% of 1200 American consumers who participated to Digital Life America – Holiday 2007 Edition survey have included at least one digital lifestyle product on their wish list.
- flat screen high definition TV set – 35% (men 37% – women 33%)
- laptop (windows) – 20% (21% – 19%)
- digital camera – 17% (16% – 18%)
- desktop PC – 14% (13% – 15%)
- GPS navigation unit for the car – 10% (11% – 10%)
- cell phone – 10% (9% – 12%)
- digital video camera – 9% (8% – 11%)
- Nintendo Wii – 9% (8% – 9%)
- Sony PS3 – 7%
- Blu-ray or HD-DVD player – 6%
First Apple product (laptop) is on rank 11 (9 among women) buzz maker iPhone is 15. Survey participants clearly prefers laptop to desktop computers.
Unfortunately the survey doesn't reveal details about the type of cell phone ("simple" ones or smartphone) and I'm surprised to not ear anything about MP3 players nor PDA. Not trendy anymore or everybody already has one ?
What your wish list would be made of ?

Et voilà! As foreseen, my S620 is now running on Windows Mobile 6.
Quick review:
The upgrade procedure was straight forward. 3-4 mins for the installation of the upgrade package and then about 5 mins to wait for the S620 to restart and finish the installation of Windows Mobile 6.
First impressions:
- No major changes on user's interface
- Predictive writing method (T9) working rather well. Definitively an improvement
- Calendar with a better view of your schedule at a glance
- More Alarm options, but still rather limited
- Improved wireless connection (faster link establishment) and better GPRS stability
- No improvement on memory management and closing running applications
- It seems that power management has improved (but perhaps just an impression)
- Can't say if the Smartphone is faster on WM6 than on WM5. Nothing significant.
More will follow, as soon as I will get familiarized with WM6.

Finally, long waited HTC S620 (Excalibur) upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 has been released. This upgrade was already available in July for T-Mobile Dash users.
Windows Mobile 6 upgrade will provide the following new and improved features :
- Stay connected to your e-mail, calendar, and contacts.- Find what you need quickly and easily including business listings, maps and directions with Windows Mobile's powerful search and filtering features.
- Get access to corporate networks for data and documents stored on file shares and SharePoint sites.
- Fit your style with a variety of designs ranging from touch screen devices with slide out keyboards to sleek full-keyboard smartphones or compact flip phones.
- Receive HTML e-mail support, improved security and encryption, greater integration with Microsoft products including direct SharePoint® intranet access from e-mail links and superior connectivity to Windows Vista™.
45 MB upgrade package is available on HTC member page but be ready for a slow connection as I can imagine the server to be a bit overloaded with S620 and TyTN upgrade downloads. More once upgrade completed Update completed, first impressions posted

Another multi protocol Instant Messaging (IM) application for mobile device (Symbian and Windows Mobile) is Fring (still a Beta). This free mobile VoIP software gives the possibility to communicate with Skype, MSN, Google Talk, Twitter.
Fring also supports SkypeOut as well as SIP-based services such as GizmoProject, VoIPStunt, among many others. Real-Time contact presence is also taken into consideration.
Once connected using packet switching network (Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE, etc..) you can then select which communication option you want to use to establish a voice communication: Fring, SkypeOut, SIP or simply the GSM network.
Unlike Agile Messenger, Fring doesn't propose file or photo transfer and Yahoo protocol has not been taken on board.
To install the software on a supported device, once the installation page filled up, a SMS is sent with the link to your terminal. Your phone number will be used as User-ID.
While doing some text and voice test using my HTC S620 (Dopod C720) I have very few points that require, on my point of view, some improvements:
- Different services cannot be managed individually
- Switch OFF external speaker while on voice call
- Add File, photo, video transfer
test continues..

Agilemobile.com, a Bangkok based company, has released the final version of Agile Messenger 3 which is a "all-in-one" Instant Messaging client for mobile terminal.
Agile supports MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ Jabber & GoogleTalk can carry all type of messages (IM, Voice, Video, Photo) and is available for Nokia, Sony Ericsson (Symbian) as well as for Windows Mobile devices (Pocket PC and Smartphone running on WM2002, WM2003 or WM5).
Price is 50 USD per licence.
For corporate users 2 options are available.
- a version of Agile Messenger that can be customized to reflect corporate identity
- a LCS client version for that connect directly to Microsoft Live Communication Server without additional gateway.
Installation is straight forward with an *.exe package, or *cab files can be downloaded directly to the mobile terminal.
I have made few test, and found the interface very pleasant & easy to use. File and photo transfer works fine, specially if you're connected through a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Cons:
- Could not update Twitter using GTalk IM protocol. Twitter user is seen online, but sent messages are not published on Twitter page.
- Skype support would certainly turn this application to a "must have" specially if the possibility of using SkypeOut gateway is given to contact people by phone.
While reaching the end of 7 days trial period given by Agile, I just found another multi-protocol IM tool for PDA and Smartphone which is free: Fring
A quick review of Fring will follow shortly is now published.

In April, HTC announced that some of their high-end models (S620, TyTN, P4350, P3300) were entitled for a free WM6 upgrade which was supposed to be available in June 07.
Earlier this week, HTC european support answered an email saying that "hopefully" WM6 ROM upgrade will be available by end of July.
