Since, mid-2006 mobile phones with a built-in 3 MP camera and optical zoon are available on the market and already represent an alternative to low end digital camera. More than 70 models are available today with a 3 to 5 MP resolution. One of the first phone with a "real camera" was the famous one Nokia N93 and its Carl Zeiss Optics.
Samsung is now putting even more pressure on camera makers with the soon release (first on European market) of its G800. A 5 MP digital camera with 3x optical zoom into mobile phone… or is it the opposite?
The specifications are rather attractive:
- Quad bands (900 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 )
- Data network HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
- 2.4 inches TFT display with 256K colors
- Size 101x52x19mm for 129 gr (25% lighter than the Nokia N93)
- Standby 220 hours, talk time 3.5 hours.
- Memory 160 MB + MicroSD slot
- Document views (Office, PPT, PDF,)
- Email (POP3, IMAP), SMS, MMS,
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB 2.0, PCSync, OutlookSync, etc..
- FM Receiver, Java embedded, MP3, etc..
and indeed the built-in camera:
- 5 Mio Pixel
- 2592х1944 pixels
- autofocus
- video recording mode: MPEG4, 3GPP, H.263, H.264
- xenon flash
- 3x optical zoom /4x digital
- 4 shot modes
- 4 quality settings
- brightness adjustment
All other specs are here
The big plus is definitively the 3x optical zoom which makes the difference with other 5 MP phones. The resolution race continues as Samsung (them again) Electro-Mechanics announced on November 15th that 8 MP camera phones may be available by next summer following the successful development of a 10.5 x 11.5 x 9.4mm 8 megapixel CMOS censor.
Will camera makers develop new "point and shoot" camera with built-in phones and multimedia facilities such MP3 player and FM receiver ?
I'm impatient to have one "box" less to carry when traveling…
What will you drop first ? your camera or your phone ?

People affected by California wildfires get and send firsthand information using micro-blogging service Twitter. Usually during emergencies, all telecommunications networks get overloaded due to huge communication flow increase in all affected areas.
2004 Tsunami taught us that when telephone landlines do not work anymore, mobile network is overloaded, short-messages (SMS) were still going through, but often with up to a hour delivery delay (better than no communication).
One of the most critical problem to solve during emergencies is how to spread information on both directions (from affected people to emergency services and from helpers to victims). In addition, affected people and their relatives are in need to get in touch.
In California, the American Red Cross, among others, have open 2 Twitters threads. One is made to push information out (e.g evacuation routes) and the 2nd one is "Safe and Well" which provides a way for affected people to register as “safe and well.” using a list of standard messages.
Concerned relatives can search the list of those who have registered themselves as “safe and well.” directly on American Red Cross website.
Among many sources: Stephenson Strategies, Wired, KPBS and Occam Razr.

Free and universal Wi-Fi community builder "FON Movimiento" is spreading fast across Europe. In September an agreement was signed with Cegetel, France 2nd largest ISP to introduce the free "Neuf Wifi FON" service. This service offers Neuf Cegetel's subscribers to share some of their Internet bandwidth through their "Wifi Neuf Box" and to become part of the FON community. Cegetel estimates that by end of 2007, 1 million of "Neuf Box 4" will be ready to support this new service.
Members of the FON community get free and secured Internet access through any "FON Spots" Wifi Access Point around the globe.
Earlier this month in United Kingdom, BT also joined forces with FON and offer to 3 million BT's broadband customers to share their Internet access and join the FON community.
Now it is the Geneva city council to sign a convention with FON to consolidate the small existing wireless network available in some key locations of the city. The city council envisages to distribute up to 500 FON routers to its citizens who may wish to share their Internet Access via the FON community (complete story, in French, on TSR telecom blog).
Non-member of the FON community will be able to get access to the Internet through FON Wifi networks using a 3 USD/day fee "FON Access Pass".
Let's hope this solution will be more successful than previous attempts as most of them were sunk by politicians and endless administrative discussions.

Few weeks ago we went to Sangklaburi, a small city near the border with Myanmar on western Thailand, about 240 kilometers from Kanchanaburi. A perfect place for photography with friendly inhabitants, great landscape and a superb wooden bride.

On Sunday at Kathmandu International airport, Nepal Airways sacrificed two goats in front of one of their flagship Boeing 757 aircrafts to appease Akash Bhairav, the Hindu sky god, following technical problems that force the company to suspend flights in the recent weeks.
"The goats were sacrificed in accordance with Hindu traditions, and the snag in the plane has now been fixed and the aircraft has resumed its flights" according a senior airline official.
We all feel safer now, isn't it?
It is certainly more as efficient as most rules that passengers must obey during air travels (no matches; no liquid; no electronics as well as windows shade up and seat back up right during take-off/landing etc..). Who knows!

At least one third of the population in developing countries has no access to safe drinking water. The lack of adequate water supply and sanitation facilities causes a serious health hazard and exposes many to the risk of water-borne diseases, This situation led to about 4 billion cases of diarrhoea each year, out of which 2.5 million cases end in death. Every day about 6000 children die of dehydration due to diarrhoea.
INDEX 2007 Award winner Solar Bottle created by italian designers Alberto Medo and Francisco Gomez Paz uses the SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection ) process, developed by the Department of Water and Sanitation at the Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Research. SODIS principle works with the sun to allow UV-A radiation and increased temperature to destroy pathogenic microorganisms in drinking water. The Solar Bottle is made of slim PET, contains 4 liters of water and can be arranged back-to-back for carry. The handle allows balanced transport and is used as stand to provide optimal solar incidence.
Indeed, a less fashionable version of SODIS process using simple ordinary plastic bottles works well too but they are more difficult to carry and the surface exposed to sun radiations is lots smaller.
More about the Solar Bottle on InHabitat More about SODIS on Eawag.

I went yesterday to the "Thailand Mobile Expo 07" with hope to discover some "real" new products. Instead I found the Expo 07 to be more a fair than an exhibition where you can find at least 2-3 salespersons per visitor, but no real new innovations.
- Samsung was presenting their Ultra Edition II series (U600, U300 and U100)
- LG came with the Prada
- Motorola was around with the Razr2 V8
- Sony Ericsson shown the new P1i & T650i
- HTC publicized the Touch and P3600i
- and Nokia with lots of different models with the N95 among them
Aside of mobile phones, they was a huge sale of different accessories such bluetooth headsets, car accessories, and all type of memory stuff such memory sticks, SD cards, MicroSD etc..
In resume, nothing different that you can already find in Bangkok IT shops and not a single word about incoming products such Apple iPhone, HTC Cavalier or Shift as per examples which is a bit pity in country where carrying the last mobile phone is still very trendy.
Let's see what next week 2nd Annual Asia IT will come with.

Strange feeling tonight as while I was watching news about current rescue operation in Peru, the earth started to shake and lights to dance for about 10 seconds.
No damage at all, just the everlasting question..do I stay in or do I rush outside.

While HTC Europe concentrate all its marketing on HTC-Touch, in Asia, HTC under its Dopod brand name has released earlier last month the Dopod C730 also known as HTC Cavalier successor of Dopod 720w (HTC S620).
At first look there are not many differences between both models. the C730 is slightly thicker (0.7mm) but also lighter 120g (-10g) than its predecessor.
Price tag in Singapore : 790 SGD (513.- USD)
Main differences are the following :
- MicroSD slot is now accessible from outside. Easier to swap cards
- Operating System is Windows Mobile 6 which integrates more services (Office files edition, Live Search, MSN, etc..)
- Camera 2 mega pixels.
- Better battery capacity (1050 mAh)
- Samsung 400 MHz CPU, 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash ROM
- Quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) + 3G and HSDPA connectivity
Some points are still missing or require improvements
- Touch-sensitive strip on the edge of the phone is still hard to tame (usually I just use it to adjust volume during calls).
- Only a 2 megapixel camera when Nokia proposes 5 mega ones.
- No LED flash and front-facing camera for 3G video calls.
- No standard audio jack but a multi-purpose mini-USB connector instead.
Full Specification available on Dopod Singapore site

This year, started on Friday 13 (when the Sun entered into the sign of Aries), Maha Songkran which is traditionally the Thai New Year. It is also known as the "Water Festival" as people believes that water will wash away bad luck. Thais traditionally celebrate Songkran like this:
- On the eve of Songkran day, it's a Spring cleanup and people clean their house and burn all the refuse.
- Early on the first day of Songkran, the people both young and old in their new clothing go to the Wat or monastery belonging to their village or district to offer food to the monks there.
- In the afternoon of the same day there is bathing ceremony of the Buddha images and also of the abbot of the wat. After this begins the well-known "water throwing feast".
The bathing of images is done as ritualistic ceremony, but it is no other than a New Year's purification. Younger people will also on this day or the succeeding days go to pay their respect to and ask blessings from their elders and respected persons. They will pour scented water into the palms of the old people and present them with a towel and other bathing requisites.
Now, as far as I could experience it on my own, in Bangkok, the "water throwing feast" did not wait until afternoon to start. At 11h00 I was already soaked head to toes while moving in direction of Kao San road. In addition of water, chalk is also widely used to make "blessings".
